The Humantay Lake hike is not recommended for people with heart problems, respiratory issues, or any serious medical conditions. Pregnant travelers should not participate in this tour.
Humantay Lake tours operate in all weather, including cold mornings, rain, and sudden changes in temperature. Please dress accordingly and be prepared for almost freezing conditions at high altitude.
The minimum recommended age for this hike is 8 years old, and it is not advisable for travelers over 60, unless they are in excellent physical condition and used to high-altitude hiking.
Hikers should be in moderate physical shape to handle the steep uphill trail. Wheelchair access is not available.
Humantay Lake is located above 4,000 meters. The altitude makes temperatures very cold—especially at dawn—so wear warm layers. Bring coca leaves, hydrate often, and carry only essential gear to make the hike easier.
At Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, many agencies offer this tour at very low prices. However, cheaper tours often include large groups of 25–35 people with only one guide.
We offer a more exclusive experience, with small groups of 2 to 8 travelers, ensuring comfort, safety, and personalized attention.
Spend at least two days in Cusco before hiking to Humantay Lake. Proper acclimatization ensures a safer and more enjoyable experience.
Bring at least 2 liters of water per person for the hike, plus an extra bottle for after. Staying hydrated is essential at high altitude.
Go to bed early and avoid drinking alcohol or partying the night before—pick-up is at 3:00 AM, and hiking with a hangover can be very difficult.
If you experience symptoms of altitude sickness, descend immediately. Safety always comes first.
If you go to Machu Picchu the day before your Humantay Lake tour, ask your agency to book your return train early, as you will be picked up at 3:00 AM the next morning.
The trail climbs quickly in altitude, so take it slow and steady to avoid feeling sick.
Stay hydrated throughout the hike to help prevent altitude-related symptoms.
Take breaks as needed. If you feel dizzy or overly tired, stop and let your body recover before continuing.
Humantay Lake weather is highly unpredictable, and temperatures can shift drastically throughout the day.
Dress in layers, starting with warm clothing for the cold morning hours. As the sun rises, temperatures increase, so you’ll want the flexibility to remove layers and stay comfortable.
This approach ensures you stay warm at dawn and adaptable during the warmer midday conditions.
Humantay Lake is a pristine natural wonder known for its turquoise waters and dramatic mountain scenery.
To protect this fragile ecosystem, always follow responsible tourism practices:
Do not leave trash behind
Stay on marked trails
Respect wildlife and local communities
By doing so, you help preserve this incredible destination for future travelers.
The area has two main seasons:
Sunny days and clear skies
Cold mornings and evenings
Ideal conditions for hiking
Frequent showers and cloudy conditions
Cooler temperatures with higher humidity
Possibility of fog around the lake
Regardless of the season, weather can change quickly due to the altitude (over 4,000 m), so be ready for cold and wind at any time.

When joining our Humantay Lake group service, please note that hikers naturally walk at different speeds. Some may hike faster, while others take their time.
We maintain an inclusive and supportive experience by allowing everyone to hike at a comfortable pace while keeping the group organized and safe.
In Peru, strikes and road blockades occur occasionally.
If a serious strike prevents safe travel, we will cancel your tour and provide a full refund for all services affected.
The hike is considered moderate to challenging, mainly due to the altitude. The trail is short but steep in some sections, and the elevation can make the hike feel more demanding.
Humantay Lake sits at approximately 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level.
