Essential Information About Machu Picchu Day Trip From Cusco

Acclimatization in Cusco

Your day trip starts and ends in Cusco, so proper acclimatization is important. We strongly recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 to 3 days before your tour to adapt to the altitude and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.

If you have already been at high altitude elsewhere in Peru, we still advise spending at least one full day in Cusco to rest and recover before your Machu Picchu day trip.

Popular activities before your tour include a Cusco City Tour, Sacred Valley excursions, Moray & Maras, or visiting the Qeswachaka Bridge.

Pre-Tour Briefing

Your tour includes a pre-tour briefing in Cusco the day before departure, where we go over the final details and the plan for the day. The briefing is at 6:00 p.m. at our office in Cusco.

If you are unable to attend, please coordinate an alternative time with us in advance.

Final Balance Payment

Any remaining balance must be paid up to 2 days before departure to confirm your reservation.

Payments can be made in cash (USD or Peruvian soles) at our office. Card or PayPal payments are accepted but include a 5% service fee applied by the payment processor. Bank checks and traveler’s checks are not accepted.

Luggage Storage

You only need a small daypack for the day. You may store your main luggage at our office or at your hotel in Cusco free of charge while you visit Machu Picchu.

We recommend keeping valuables in your hotel safe and not leaving important items inside stored luggage.

Pick-Up Information

Pick-up is from your hotel or Airbnb in Cusco, usually between 3:45 and 4:15 AM. We recommend staying in the historic center for easier access. If you are staying in the Sacred Valley, your transfer can be coordinated in advance.

Your exact pick-up time will be confirmed the day before departure. Due to traffic and narrow streets, pick-up times may vary by 30–45 minutes.

Return to Cusco

Transportation back to Cusco is included. After your visit, you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have free time before boarding the train to Ollantaytambo.

From there, our driver will transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco.

Group Tours

Group tours include travelers of different ages and physical conditions.

The guide reserves the right to make itinerary adjustments if necessary after consulting the group.

Strikes & Unforeseen Events

Strikes and demonstrations occasionally occur in Peru and may affect travel plans. In such cases, our operations team will coordinate alternative arrangements.

Your safety is always our highest priority.

Personal Belongings

Please keep track of your personal items at all times, on the train, on the bus and inside Machu Picchu. We are not responsible for lost or forgotten belongings during the tour.

FAQs

Is there a special rate for Peruvians and Andean Community residents?

Yes. Peruvians, residents of Peru and citizens of the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador) pay the same national rate for the Machu Picchu entrance: S/ 69 instead of the S/ 163 that foreign adults pay in 2026. Your tour price is reduced by that difference in the entrance fee; everything else stays the same. Send us your DNI or passport details and we will send you your exact price.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking as early as possible, especially during high season (May to September). Entrance tickets and train seats have limited availability and can sell out quickly.

Which Machu Picchu circuit is included?

Your entrance is assigned based on availability at the time of booking. Circuits 1 or 2 are usually preferred, but alternatives may be confirmed if needed.

Which train class can I choose?

You choose the train class when you book: Expedition, Voyager or Vistadome. Most of our travelers choose Vistadome or Voyager. The fare depends on the class and the schedule, so we confirm the final price with your booking.

Is this tour physically demanding?

The tour involves walking on stone paths and some stairs. You only need basic fitness: about 2–3 hours of walking with stairs at Machu Picchu, which is manageable for most travelers.

Are meals included?

Breakfast and lunch are not included. You will have free time in Aguas Calientes to enjoy a meal at a local restaurant.

What happens if my train schedule changes?

Train times are subject to availability. Any changes will be communicated in advance, and all logistics will be adjusted accordingly.

Can I stay longer inside Machu Picchu after the guided tour?

Entry time and duration depend on the circuit assigned. In some cases, additional time may be allowed, but re-entry is not permitted once you exit.

Do I need to bring my passport?

Yes. The original passport used for booking is mandatory for train boarding and entrance to Machu Picchu.

What if there is bad weather?

Machu Picchu is open year-round. Tours operate in most weather conditions, and light rain is common, especially during the rainy season.
