Day 1
Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Aguas Calientes
Your Short Inca Trail 2 Days adventure begins with an early transfer from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, followed by a scenic train ride to Km 104, the starting point of the hike. From here, you’ll walk along original Inca stone paths through lush landscapes rich in flora and fauna, while your guide shares insights into Inca history and culture.
Along the trail, you’ll explore important archaeological sites such as Chachabamba and the stunning Wiñay Wayna, considered the most beautiful ruins on the Inca Trail. After lunch, the hike continues to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where you’ll enjoy your first unforgettable view of Machu Picchu from above.
You’ll then descend to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll check into your hotel and have the evening free to relax or visit the town’s hot springs.

Day 2
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
After an early breakfast, you’ll take the bus up to Machu Picchu and enjoy a guided tour of approximately two hours, exploring its most important temples, terraces, and viewpoints. You’ll then have free time to explore on your own or choose an optional hike to Huayna Picchu (subject to availability).
Later, return to Aguas Calientes for lunch before boarding the afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, our private transport will take you back to Cusco, arriving in the evening.

Important – Trail Regulations
Access to the Short Inca Trail (Km 104) is strictly limited to 250 people per day, including guides and staff. Once permits sell out, no further reservations can be made for that date. Permits are limited and should be booked well in advance, especially during the high season.
⚠️ The Inca Trail is closed in February for annual maintenance.

Pack light: Porters are not included on this trek, so you will carry everything in a daypack.

Strikes & Contingency Plans
Strikes and roadblocks may occur in Peru and can affect train or road services. If this happens, Salas Travel Peru will adapt the itinerary to ensure your experience continues safely:

Strike on Day 1: Transfer to Aguas Calientes the night before (hotel not included). The next day, you’ll hike an extra section to reach Km 104.

Strike on Day 2: Return via Hidroelectrica, including an additional 2-hour hike and a van transfer back to Cusco, arriving in the evening.
Travel Insurance
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance. In case of illness, injury, or last-minute cancellation, insurance may reimburse non-refundable costs such as permits and medical expenses.

The Short Inca Trail is considered moderately difficult. While it is only one day of hiking, it includes stone steps, steep ascents, and altitude. Most travelers with a basic fitness level complete it comfortably.

How do I reserve the Short Inca Trail 2 Days?
To secure your spot, simply click BOOK NOW, choose your departure date, complete the traveler information, and pay the USD 150 deposit using a credit or debit card. Once permits are confirmed, your date is fully guaranteed.
Is there a special rate for Peruvians and Andean Community residents?
Yes. Peruvians, residents of Peru and citizens of the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador) pay the same national rate for the Machu Picchu entrance: S/ 69 instead of the S/ 163 that foreign adults pay in 2026. Your tour price is reduced by that difference in the entrance fee; everything else stays the same. Send us your DNI or passport details and we will send you your exact price.
Can I book for 2027 now?
Yes. We are already taking 2027 bookings: you reserve your space by paying 40% of the tour price. We buy your Inca Trail permit from the Ministry of Culture as soon as sales open for your month, and your date is guaranteed once the permit is issued. High-season dates sell out fast, so booking early is the best way to get your date.
Which train class can I choose?
You choose the train class when you book: Expedition, Voyager or Vistadome. Most of our travelers choose Vistadome or Voyager. The fare depends on the class and the schedule, so we confirm the final price with your booking.
Which optional add-ons are available?

Which Machu Picchu routes are included?
This trek includes two different circuits:

Can I leave my luggage somewhere during the trek?
Yes. You may safely store extra luggage either at our office or at your hotel in Cusco. We recommend carrying only what you need for the hike.

If added, Huayna Picchu is scheduled between 9:00 and 10:00 am on Day 2. You’ll enjoy an early guided tour of Machu Picchu first, then hike Huayna Picchu, finishing around midday before returning to Aguas Calientes.

How does Machu Picchu Mountain work?
Machu Picchu Mountain is scheduled between 8:00 and 9:00 am. After an early guided tour, you’ll exit and re-enter the site for the mountain hike, which takes approximately 3 hours.
Is the Machu Picchu entrance ticket included?
Yes. Your Machu Picchu entrance ticket is included with the Short Inca Trail 2 Days.
Is there a fixed entry time at Machu Picchu?
Inca Trail permits allow flexible entry. We usually enter early in the morning to avoid crowds, but timing can be adjusted depending on the group.
How physically demanding is the Short Inca Trail?
The Short Inca Trail is rated moderate. It includes stone steps, uphill sections, and altitude. A reasonable fitness level is recommended.

What type of water bottle should I bring?
Reusable bottles or hydration bladders are required. Single-use plastic bottles are prohibited on the Inca Trail.
Is there an age requirement?
There is no official age limit, but we recommend a minimum age of 7 years due to steep sections.
How much weight can I carry?
There is no official limit, but there are no porters on the Short Inca Trail, so keep your daypack under 5–6 kg (11–13 lb). On the train you can bring one backpack of up to 8 kg (18 lb) per person.

The tour includes a boxed lunch on the trail on day 1. Breakfast on day 2 is served at your hotel in Aguas Calientes and comes with your room. Breakfast before departure on day 1, dinner in Aguas Calientes and lunch on day 2 are not included.
Are porters included?
No. The Short Inca Trail does not include porters: you carry a light daypack with what you need for the day, and your main luggage stays in Cusco.
Can I hike the Short Inca Trail without a guide?
No. The Peruvian government requires all Short Inca Trail hikers to be accompanied by a licensed tour operator and certified guide.
