Not Suitable for Certain Travelers
The Humantay Lake hike is not recommended for people with heart problems, respiratory issues, or any serious medical conditions. Pregnant travelers should not participate in this tour.
Humantay Weather
Humantay Lake tours operate in all weather, including cold mornings, rain, and sudden changes in temperature. Please dress accordingly and be prepared for almost freezing conditions at high altitude.
Age Restrictions
The minimum recommended age for this hike is 8 years old, and it is not advisable for travelers over 60, unless they are in excellent physical condition and used to high-altitude hiking.
Physical Requirements
Hikers should be in moderate physical shape to handle the steep uphill trail. Wheelchair access is not available.
Altitude & Cold Temperatures
Humantay Lake is located above 4,000 meters. The altitude makes temperatures very cold—especially at dawn—so wear warm layers. Bring coca leaves, hydrate often, and carry only essential gear to make the hike easier.
Why Tour Prices Vary in Cusco
At Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, many agencies offer this tour at very low prices. However, cheaper tours often include large groups of 25–35 people with only one guide.
We offer a more exclusive experience, with small groups of 2 to 8 travelers, ensuring comfort, safety, and personalized attention.
Our Recommendations
Acclimatize in Cusco First
Spend at least two days in Cusco before hiking to Humantay Lake. Proper acclimatization ensures a safer and more enjoyable experience.
Stay Hydrated
Bring at least 2 liters of water per person for the hike, plus an extra bottle for after. Staying hydrated is essential at high altitude.
Rest the Night Before
Go to bed early and avoid drinking alcohol or partying the night before—pick-up is at 3:00 AM, and hiking with a hangover can be very difficult.
Listen to Your Body
If you experience symptoms of altitude sickness, descend immediately. Safety always comes first.
If Visiting Machu Picchu the Day Before
If you go to Machu Picchu the day before your Humantay Lake tour, ask your agency to book your return train early, as you will be picked up at 3:00 AM the next morning.
Simple Tips for Hiking to Humantay Lake
Go Slow
The trail climbs quickly in altitude, so take it slow and steady to avoid feeling sick.
Drink Water
Stay hydrated throughout the hike to help prevent altitude-related symptoms.
Rest Often
Take breaks as needed. If you feel dizzy or overly tired, stop and let your body recover before continuing.
Dress Appropriately
Humantay Lake weather is highly unpredictable, and temperatures can shift drastically throughout the day.
Dress in layers, starting with warm clothing for the cold morning hours. As the sun rises, temperatures increase, so you’ll want the flexibility to remove layers and stay comfortable.
This approach ensures you stay warm at dawn and adaptable during the warmer midday conditions.
