Machu Picchu is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Peru, but thinking it is the only site worth visiting is a massive misconception. The Sacred Valley of the Incas, stretching between Cusco and Machu Picchu, is an absolute treasure trove of history, culture, and engineering marvels.

If you want to truly understand the brilliance of the Inca Empire, you cannot skip these three sites:

1. The Terraces of Moray

At first glance, Moray looks like a giant green amphitheater. In reality, it was a highly sophisticated Incan agricultural laboratory. The concentric circular terraces create distinct microclimates, with temperature variations of up to 15°C (27°F) from top to bottom. This allowed the Incas to experiment with different crops at various altitudes.

2. The Fortress of Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo is known as the “Living Inca City” because it is one of the few places where the original Incan urban planning is still in use today. The sheer scale of the stone terraces climbing up the mountainside is awe-inspiring, and it holds immense historical significance as the site where the Incas secured a major victory against the Spanish conquistadors.

3. The Ruins and Market of Pisac

Perched high on a ridge overlooking the Urubamba River, the Pisac ruins offer some of the most dramatic views in the valley. The site features intricate stonework and sprawling agricultural terraces. Afterward, head down to the town square to browse the vibrant Pisac Market for beautiful textiles and artisan crafts.
