What to Pack for Your Trip to Machu Picchu: The Essential Packing List

If you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Machu Picchu, you've probably come across different trekking routes to reach the Lost City of the Incas. The most popular ones are the Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek, and the Inca Jungle Trek. Each offers a unique experience in terms of scenery, difficulty, cultural sites, and adventure.

In this packing guide from Salas Travel, we’ll walk you through the essential items you’ll need for your trip to Machu Picchu—so you don’t forget anything important.

What to Pack for Your Trip to Machu Picchu: The Essential Packing List

Clothing: Layer Like a Pro

Peru’s Andean climate can be sunny during the day and chilly at night. The secret? Layering.

Essentials:
  • Lightweight waterproof jacket or poncho
  • Warm fleece or down jacket (especially for Salkantay or Inca Trail)
  • Breathable t-shirts (quick-dry recommended)
  • Long-sleeve shirts (for sun and bugs)
  • Trekking pants (zip-off style is great)
  • Thermal underwear (if trekking in the cold season)
  • Sleepwear
Footwear:
  • Hiking boots (broken in!)
  • Comfortable shoes/sandals for after the hike
  • Hiking socks (bring 3-5 pairs, moisture-wicking)

Gear & Equipment

The gear you bring will depend on your trek. If you book with Salas Travel, we provide tents, sleeping bags (optional), and mats for multi-day treks.

Must-Haves:
  • Daypack (20-30L) with rain cover
  • Reusable water bottle or hydration bladder
  • Headlamp or flashlight (with extra batteries)
  • Trekking poles (optional but useful)
  • Sunglasses and sun hat
  • Small towel and personal toiletries
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Travel pillow (optional, but nice to have)

Health & Hygiene

Machu Picchu sits at a lower elevation than Cusco, but if you’re trekking, you’ll likely reach altitudes over 4,000 meters. Be prepared for altitude and stay hydrated.

Health Essentials:
  • Sunscreen (high SPF)
  • Insect repellent (especially for Inca Jungle or Machu Picchu)
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Personal medication
  • Altitude sickness pills (consult your doctor)
  • Wet wipes / hand sanitizer
  • Toilet paper (in a ziplock)

Extras That Make a Difference

Sometimes it’s the little things that can make or break your trip.

Don’t Forget:
  • Passport (you’ll need it to enter Machu Picchu)
  • Cash in soles (for snacks, tips, and toilets)
  • Power bank / portable charger
  • Camera or smartphone with extra storage
  • Snacks (nuts, protein bars, chocolate)
  • Ziplock bags or dry bags (to protect electronics from rain)
