    Day 1: Short Inca Trail Trek

    Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Km. 104 - Chachabamba - Wiñay Wayna - Sun Gate Inti Punku - Aguas Calientes

    Our first day of the 2-Day Inca Trail Hike to Machu Picchu will begin early. We will leave Cusco and head to Ollantaytambo, a charming town nestled in the Sacred Valley. From here, we will board a train that will take us to Km 104 (2,100 meters / 6,889 feet), the starting point of our Short Inca Trail. The anticipation will grow as we step onto the trail, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Andes Mountains.

      Chachabamba Archaeological Site

      Upon arrival at Km 104, we will cross a bridge over the roaring Urubamba River. We will enter the Chachabamba archaeological site. Here, we will have a brief stop to explore the well-preserved stone structures. It once served as an important ceremonial center for the Incas. This site will give us our first taste of the fascinating history we will encounter throughout this short Inca Trail tour. As we continue, the trail will ascend gradually, offering spectacular views of the valley below. The path will take us through lush, green cloud forests. We might spot vibrant orchids and exotic birds, making this journey a rich experience in nature.

      Wiñay Wayna

      We will reach Wiñay Wayna (2,650 meters / 8,694 feet) around midday. This impressive site nestles on a steep hillside. This part of the Inca Trail is popular for its cascading terraces and intricate stonework. We will take our time to explore the site and learn about its significance. We will enjoy a packed lunch, surrounded by its peaceful ambiance. After resting at Wiñay Wayna, we will resume our hike along a stone-paved path that leads to the Sun Gate. Locals refer to it as Inti Punku. The trail will become more exhilarating as we get closer to this ancient entryway.

      Sun Gate

      We will reap the rewards of our efforts when we finally stand at the Sun Gate. There, we will catch our first breathtaking glimpse of Machu Picchu. Bathed in the afternoon light, the sight of the citadel nestled amidst towering mountains will be unforgettable. After savoring this incredible view, we will begin our descent towards Aguas Calientes. This bustling town is at the base of Machu Picchu. Our journey for the day will end here, where we can rest, enjoy a warm meal, and relax.
