How many days should you acclimatize in Cusco before a trek?

Juan from Salas Travel here. "How many days do I need in Cusco first?" is one of the questions we get most. Here is what we tell our own travelers.

How many days before a multi-day trek?

Plan 2 to 3 days in Cusco before any multi-day trek. Use them for easy walks around the city and nearby sites, not for long hikes.

Does it depend on the trek?

Yes. The higher the route, the more those days matter:

  • Short Inca Trail and 1-day Inca Trail: the trail is lower than Cusco. The highest point is Inti Punku at 2,720 m. You still arrive in Cusco first, so a relaxed first day there helps.
  • Classic Inca Trail: the Warmiwañusca pass is at 4,215 m.
  • Choquequirao: you start at Capuliyoc (2,918 m) and camp near the ruins at 3,064 m, with long climbs in between.
  • Salkantay: the pass is at 4,630 m.
  • Ausangate: routes go up to 5,036 m. Take your acclimatization days seriously here.

What helps during those days?

  • Take it easy on the first day and walk slowly, especially uphill.
  • Drink water regularly.
  • Keep meals light and go easy on alcohol at first.
  • Sleep well and do not fill every hour with activities.

Should I see a doctor?

If you have a heart or lung condition, are pregnant, or are unsure how altitude may affect you, talk to your doctor before the trip, including about any medication. During the trek, tell your guide right away if you feel unwell. We would rather adjust the pace than push through.

Where can I read more?

Our article on Short Inca Trail difficulty covers altitude and fitness on the Km 104 route. For the treks above, see the Short Inca Trail, the Classic Inca Trail, the Choquequirao trek and the Salkantay trek.
