Experience Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) in a faster, more exciting, and adventure-filled way. Our ATV tour is the ideal option for travelers who want to enjoy this natural wonder without the strain of a long hike—combining adrenaline, breathtaking Andean scenery, and easy access to the iconic viewpoint.
The adventure begins early in Cusco. After a comfortable drive in our tourist vehicle, we reach the starting point for the ATV journey. From here, you’ll ride your own quad bike through stunning high-Andean landscapes, wide-open valleys, small rural communities, and routes surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks. The ATV route dramatically reduces walking time and allows you to enjoy more views with less physical effort.
Once we arrive at the closest point to Rainbow Mountain, a short and easy hike leads us to the viewpoint. Here, the famous natural “rainbow” of the Andes unfolds before you—an incredible blend of colors formed by mineral-rich layers over millions of years.
Perfect for travelers looking to make the most of their day, this tour blends speed, nature, culture, and unforgettable landscapes into one unique experience.
Our adventure begins early so we can enjoy Rainbow Mountain at its best.
At 6:00 AM, we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and start a scenic drive of approximately 3.5 hours (about 100 km / 62 miles) toward our ATV base camp.
We arrive around 10:30 AM at the ATV base camp.
Here, our expert guides will give you a complete safety briefing, introduce you to the ATVs, and explain how to operate them confidently. This ensures everyone is fully prepared before the ride begins.
At 11:00 AM, we start our off-road adventure.
You’ll ride through the stunning high-Andean countryside, open valleys, and picturesque rural villages. This section of the tour gives you a unique look at the region’s culture and breathtaking landscapes.
The ATV ride to the Rainbow Mountain area lasts approximately 35 minutes, crossing diverse and scenic terrain.
We reach the base of Rainbow Mountain around 11:00 AM and park our ATVs.
From here, we continue on foot toward the viewpoint.
The hike takes about 1.5 hours and reaches an impressive altitude of 5,036 m / 17,060 ft.
Along the ascent, you’ll enjoy incredible views of the mineral-rich layers that give Rainbow Mountain its world-famous colors.
At 12:30 PM, we arrive at the spectacular Rainbow Mountain viewpoint.
You will have plenty of time to explore, take unforgettable photos, and enjoy your lunch surrounded by one of Peru’s most iconic natural wonders.
Our guides will also share fascinating information about the mountain’s geology, history, and cultural significance.
After soaking in the views, we begin the descent at 2:00 PM.
The return hike takes approximately 15 minutes, leading us back to the ATVs.
Once everyone is ready, we ride back to the base camp—another 35-minute ATV journey filled with beautiful scenery and exciting off-road moments.
We reach the base camp around 2:00 PM, where we say farewell to the ATVs and prepare for our return to Cusco.
We board our transport and begin the 3.5-hour drive back to the city.
You’ll arrive at your accommodation around 6:30 PM, ending the day with unforgettable memories from this incredible ATV adventure to Rainbow Mountain.

The community of Kayrawiri owns both the land and the ATVs.
All tour companies, including ours, rent the ATVs from the locals and must follow their rules.
One of their main regulations is that ATV use cannot exceed two hours; otherwise, a penalty is applied.
For this reason, we typically book the ATVs from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
This tour is not recommended for travelers with heart conditions or serious medical issues, as Rainbow Mountain sits above 5,040 meters (16,535 ft).
Due to the altitude and low temperatures, this tour is not advised for people over 60 years old.
Not suitable for pregnant travelers.
The ATV tour operates in all weather conditions, so dressing appropriately is essential.
Because there is little physical activity (mostly ATV riding), your body will feel the cold more intensely.
We strongly recommend wearing warm layers, gloves, a windbreaker, and a hat, as temperatures remain low even on sunny days due to altitude and strong winds.
Although the tour is ATV-based, you still need to walk for about 10 minutes to reach the main viewpoint.
Reaching the top rewards you with a 360° panoramic view of Rainbow Mountain, the nearby glacier, and a beautiful valley behind you.
Many travelers miss this by stopping halfway—don’t skip it!
The ideal moments to visit Rainbow Mountain are early morning or late afternoon, right after sunrise or just before sunset.
These times help you enjoy the experience with fewer crowds and softer, more beautiful light for photos.
In Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, many agencies offer this tour at extremely low prices.
However, these tours often place 25 to 35+ people with just one guide.
At Salas Travel Peru, we prioritize quality and safety with small groups of 2 to 8 travelers, ensuring personalized attention throughout the experience.
Spend at least two days in Cusco before joining the tour.
Even with ATVs, altitude can cause headaches or discomfort, and you will still hike to the viewpoint.
Proper acclimatization will make your experience safer and far more enjoyable.
Drink plenty of water before and during the tour.
We recommend carrying 2 liters per person, plus an extra bottle left in the van for your return.
Go to bed early the night before.
Avoid alcohol and parties—riding an ATV at high altitude with a hangover is not pleasant, especially with a 3:00 AM pick-up.
If you plan to tour Machu Picchu the day before your ATV adventure, inform your travel company so they can book your return trip with enough time for you to rest before the early pick-up.
Booking is simple. Just click the BOOK NOW button on our page, choose your preferred departure date, and complete the form with each participant’s personal information. A deposit of $80 per person is required to secure your spot.
Once we receive your payment, we’ll send an email confirming your reservation so your tour is 100% guaranteed.
Because the ATVs belong to the local Kayrawiri community and must be returned within a set schedule, your time at the top of Rainbow Mountain is limited to 40 minutes. This rule applies to all companies that rent ATVs. If we owned our own quad bikes, we would gladly offer more time, but for now, we follow the community’s regulations to support their local economy.
With the ATV tour, you typically reach Rainbow Mountain around 08:00 AM, depending on weather, road conditions, and group pace.
You may pay the remaining balance in cash (USD or soles) at our office in Cusco two days before your tour.
If you prefer to pay earlier by credit card, you can do so at least one week prior (a 5% service fee applies).
Cash is the most convenient option, as it avoids extra transaction fees. Let us know your preferred method.
Unfortunately, no. We do not offer a student discount for the Rainbow Mountain ATV tour, as pricing is the same for all travelers.
You can extend your visit to include the Red Valley, but you’ll need to return to the trailhead on foot, as the allotted ATV rental time isn’t enough to explore both areas.
The Red Valley hike takes about 1 hour round trip. Many travelers choose this for a deeper, more rewarding experience of the landscape.
Yes.
Mornings often start below freezing, and temperatures at the summit typically range from 5°C to 15°C (40°F to 60°F).
On cloudy or rainy days, it can drop to 0°C to 10°C (32°F to 50°F).
Warm layers, gloves, and wind-resistant jackets are highly recommended.
