Choquequirao status update (October 2026): open, and the cable car is still in tender

Juan from Salas Travel here. We get many messages asking whether Choquequirao is open and whether the cable car is finished. Here is where things stand in October 2026.

Is Choquequirao open right now?

Yes. The site and the trail closed for the rainy season from 1 February to late April 2026 and reopened around 22–23 April.

Is the cable car working?

No. The cable car project is still in the tender stage. The award is expected in the last quarter of 2026, and the total concession cost is about USD 442 million. There is no construction on site yet. For now the only way to reach Choquequirao is on foot, and that will not change any time soon. Our Choquequirao cable car article follows the project step by step.

How much is the entrance fee?

The entrance is S/ 60 for adults. It is included in our tour, so you do not need to buy it separately.

When is the best time to go?

The best months are April to October, when the trail is drier. October is the end of that window, so if you are thinking about this season, plan soon.

What does the trek look like?

Our Choquequirao trek in 4 days starts at Capuliyoc (2,918 m), drops to Playa Rosalina (1,550 m) by the Apurímac River and climbs to camp near the ruins at 3,064 m. It is about 40 km round trip from Capuliyoc, with a cook, mules for the equipment and a mule for 7 kg of your personal luggage. The price is USD 475 per person from 2 travelers.
